NFPA 20 – A Design Professional’s Perspective

0.1 CEU | 1.0 CPD | 1.0 Contact Hours

Speaker: John August Denhardt, P.E., ET, CWBSP, FSFPE

Description: This presentation will discuss the installation of fire pumps from the design professional’s perspective. The owner is responsible for determining the water supply for water-based fire protection systems and that often falls to the design professional. Other design considerations that will be discussed in this presentation include sizing and selecting an appropriate and efficient fire pump, determining reliable and alternate power arrangements for electric drive motors, and identifying the available options for diesel engines based on ambient conditions.

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of this webinar attendees will be able to:

1. Identify which responsible party is charged with determining the water supply

2. Understand the standard fire pump curve and what aspects of the pump assembly can be modified to improve performance and efficiency

3. Determine redundancy requirements for high-rise and very tall buildings and when fire pumps may not be necessary in low- and mid-rises

4. Identify the design considerations for diesel engine fire pumps including corrections to rated bhp, ventilation, cooling, and fuel supply.
